Puppet-Building for Kids: Animal Masks
Taught by String and Shadow's artistic director Emily McHugh, this workshop presents children with a unique opportunity to make their own cardboard and paper-mache creations. From design to sculpting, paper-mache to painting, each step of the puppet-building process is covered in this comprehensive workshop that is engaging and rewarding. Recommended for kids 8+. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Emily also offers a version of this workshop taught via Zoom.
Shadows & Light: How to Make Your Own Shadow Puppet Show
In this workshop, participants learn the basics of shadow puppetry and will leave the workshop feeling ready to make their own shadow puppet show. Taught by String and Shadow's artistic director Emily McHugh, this workshop will teach you how to make your own shadow puppet screen (skrim) at home, lighting techniques, and what materials to use to make your first puppets, among other helpful tips and tricks for getting started. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Emily also offers a version of this workshop taught via Zoom.
The Power of Mask: Mask-Making How and Why
In this workshop adults of all skill-levels will be introduced to String and Shadow's unique method of mask masking, from armature, sculpture, to paper-mache. Taught by String and Shadow's artistic directors Emily McHugh and Donald Palardy, this comprehensive workshop presents individuals with an opportunity to explore their own relationship to the ideas of mask, disguise, and transformation. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this workshop is also available via Zoom, although with some differences.
